Moon boots for Earth: Personal Fashion

Images by Alison Wynn

Dress: Courtesy Let Them Stare; Jacket: Thrifted; Shoes: Underground UK; Glasses: Fendi; Necklace: OS Accessories

Anastasia's design for this black tuxedo dress reminded me so much of Rei Kawakubo's eccentricity  that I decided to style the whole look very Comme Des Garcon-ish. Turned a tweed jacket upside down over the asymmetrical waist-lined dress. The dress is definitely going into my work staple. You should check out more of her work here.

In other weekend news, I went kayaking on the Hudson for the first time and loved it. Found a new dumpling place in china town and have a new favorite. Did laundry. Hung out with friends. And stayed in today because I was forced to by a stupid cold. But had a decent weekend despite the cold and I cannot wait for the next weekend to arrive when I get to take a mini vacation to Vermont for 4 days. Everybody rejoice!

Part of Us Lives For Ever: Street Fashion

Images by Prutha Raithatha

Something we always wonder is if we belonged to a previous life in some previous era in another human body and in another place in the world. I strongly believed I did and I will in the future lives to come. Every life has a very different me and there is nothing in common each time. Just the essence of me is familiar. I think. Maybe. I don't know.

My first time at the Governor's Island Jazz festival in NYC. I belonged. I swear. Expect me to find the most dark dames at the ball to admire. I was a peasant. I didn't dress to desire. I had chores to do. But I envy these pretty dames. I really do. Someday, in my next life, I will be as pretty as them. I think. Maybe. I don't know.

Interview with Nicholas Kirkwood

An interview with Nicholas Kirkwood [done for Vogue.in] about his Spring Summer line.

Earlier this year I attended an event hosted by Saks Fifth avenue showcasing Nickolas Kirkwood's Spring summer collection. The designer gave out personally signed postcards of his shoe sketches to the attendees and signed a few shoe soles for people who bought a pair. He is the warmest person I think I met. I asked him a couple of questions about his collection over cupcakes and champagne just for you.

DSM: Tell us a little bit about your correct collection.
Nicholas K: The collection embellishes the classic representations of feminity like the bow or the rose by doing a modern perspective on them. And also making sure that it’s not too girly. It’s very important for me to find that balance between not being too girly and too fierce at the same time.

DSM: There seems to be a sudden increase in Bollywood influences in the fashion industry with the Chanel pre-fall show and Christian Loubutin’s new Bollywood line. Are you planning anything in your future collections that is India influenced?
NK: I have started experimenting with embroidery and I get it done in India. There are so many amazing techniques out there and you can do a lot with it.

DSM: And embroidery is cheaper in India?
NK: Well, not where I get it done.

DSM: Your Alice in Wonderland shoes never seizes to amaze, even now. Are you going to do more designs like them in the future?
NK: Yes definitely. I made Alice in Wonderland shoes the first time not for any commercial reason but because I wanted to see what would come out of it and how it can me done and what the turn out is. That’s what makes my job exciting. If I was making only black pumps I wouldn’t be creatively satisfied. Fashion has got to have an element of fantasy.

DSM: Do u think such fantasy shoes are just difficult to sell?
NK: No. It’s just difficult to make them practical for people to use. Alice in Wonderland shoes had tiny teacups, horses and keys and watches on it, if you try to walk in them you’ll smash all these elements. It’s not like people have not tried to buy them, it’s just that it’s not practical to sell them.

Thanks Nicholas for the beautiful sketch postcards and your brilliant shoe designs.

About Real Positivity: Personal Fashion

 Tee Dress: Zara

Love a message written down in words. It's so in your face you have to read it. And if you read it over and over again for as long as you wear the dress, it may register in your mind and teach you something. no? Even though this message on this dress is too pretty and nice for my taste, I still think the outfit is bad-ass enough to compliment the goody goody message.

Walked down the streets of Soho bare feet for a bit. Just cause. It's fantastic! You should try it someday too. Everything is happy and green on a gorgeous day like today.

NYFW Runway Archive on DSM Facebook

So I have been updating Don't Shoe Me's Facebook page with a ton of photo albums of the past NY Fashion Week shows. Creating an Archive of images as I don't end up posting or using all the images on the blog. Facebook is a great way for me to keep my archives. Which are not even 1/2 complete yet, but I still have a bunch and will keep updating from time to time with runway and backstage etc images from each show. So go check it out in the photos of the DSM facebook page. The album name tells you which show and what year it is. These are all original images taken by me or my team. Enjoy!

Quicker Than the Ray of Light: Personal Fashion

Images by Jackie Russo

Dress: All Saints; Shoes: Moonspoon; Glasses: Gucci

Summer is the best time in NYC. 3 weekends of the summer Mayor Bloomberg shuts down Park Ave for half a day to all vehicular traffic so people of NYC can run/ bike/ do yoga on the street. Ever since this program started 5 years ago, I have taken advantage of it in different ways. Sometimes running all the way from 72nd street down to brooklyn and back, biking and this year shot part of this post on summer streets. I love that we can do whatever we want on Park Ave on these 3 weekends in summer. I have also seen kids having a picnic on the tiny landscape in the middle of the road divider. It's wonderful.

I love pairing my maxi dresses with a bandana. Around the neck, arm, head, anywhere. It's always fun. I wish All Saints learn how to make all their clothes a wee bit lighter in weight, that has been the only issue I have had with their clothes so far. Need new shoes. But I can't get over/ enough of these moon boots [I know you know :)].

Other than that I am having another fantastic summer weekend with concerts, friends and overall overdose of happiness. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer as much too. Please do share stories if you have any.
