Nailed It: Vogue India

Here is my new blog post for Vogue India.

When fashion people say “she looked so put together from tip to toe”, we mean that she put the effort to coordinate [which should not be confused with the word “match”. They are 2 entirely different words. If someone was completely matchy- matchy they most certainly would not be fashionably coordinated] her entire outfit. This includes her makeup, accessories and nails. Having your nails done has become such a big part of the feminine culture all around the world that we now have nail salons every couple of blocks. It’s a girl’s way of getting her alone time and pampering herself. Lovely well-done nails can totally flip the mood of the day for a lady.

But when you don’t have the time and the money to spend at a fancy nail salon and still want some super creative nail art, what do you do? Gone are the days when we would experiment with 2-3 different nail paints to make patterns ourselves. Welcome the new age of stick on nail art, where no glue is required, no real manicure skills are required either and the nails come out looking professional and last atleast a week without chipping. There are various different types of stick on nail art, but the best and the most easiest to use are the Sally Hansen and Sephora ones.

The Sally Hansen pre designed nail art come in some beautiful and fun patterns like leopard print, flower patterns, plain neon’s, plain glitter, herringbone etc. My personal favorite is the herringbone. The Sephora stick-ons come is some additional patterns, 3d bling included. Check out some of these options below and tell me if you don’t love these 15 min nails that last for a week at $5-$10 approximately.

In a Sea of Too many Strings Attached, Stagnant: Personal Fashion

Images by NURBS

Top: Club Monaco; Necklace: Bosquejo

Trying mixed geometry. Wrapped some black and white material as a sari over one of my favorite tees that got ruined in a laundry experience. It still fits, except it has 20 holes in it. Shot this incredible shoot at an art exhibition and the installation [produced by none other than our very own Shraddha Borawake] with tons of industrial waste yarn as a lounging area was the crowd favorite. I love how the pools of yarn create art in so many different forms: color, space, texture, volume and experience.

The razor necklace is one of my favorites, tracked down all the way from the Philippines ☺. I love when I find something perfect to add to my wardrobe. Even if it means a lot of internet searching before I find the source..lol…your welcome.

People who follow DSM on facebook and twitter may already know how obsessed I am with these Sally Hansen nail art things. I have them in all different designs and highly recommend them. So easy to use and found at any drug store.

I want to sincerely thank NURBS for all his fantastic work, talent and friendship over the past year while shooting for DSM. I am utterly humbled by your support to help me make my dreams come true through this blog. Good luck in Hong Kong my friend. Will miss you crazy!!

Gold Sold: Personal Fashion

Images by NURBS

Shorts, Purple top, Leopard Wedges: TopShop; Sweater: Zara; Gold kicks: Irregular Choices

I am obsessed with this sweater. It looks like an old grandmom sweater and that is why I can't seem to stop wearing it. The shorts and top are a cool blinged out combination. And you know me. To me, more is more [I shall tone it down and be subtle when I am old...mayyyybee]. The gold kicks are my newest most favorite possession ever. I have been wearing them nonstop too. At first I was kinda reluctant to wear them to my very conservative architecture/ real estate firm, but then I realized that my co-workers would have gotten used to me by now [with my red hair and other daily fashion shocks]. So I did it. I wore them to work :). Most people liked them, the others were sweet enough to say "they are totally you". I really appreciate that, I have to say. A million people don't get us but if they just let us be who we are without judgement or snarky comments, the world will be a better place.

Bumped into Subi Roberto, a cool miami artist, at the shoot who also had an Indian nose ring in her hotel room [the location is the front garden of a hotel in soho where she was put up] and while NURBS and I where shooting, ran up stairs and joined us in the end of our shoot for a quick nath [nose ring] photo. I love people who get excited about creativity.

Light Up My Life: Personal Fashion

Images by NURBS

Dress: Complex Geometry; Shoes: Irregular Choices; Necklace: Indian Temple Jewelry

This past week has been crazy!! Reconnecting with tons of people from my old life and some new. Life is one crazy roller coster and I love it!! The necklace I am wearing is one of my favorites and always gets  a lot of attention. One of my closest friends gave it to me as a present. She has incredible taste for sure and I miss her like crazy!! The last time I wore it, I went to the A.Wang sample sale in NYC and one of the girls at the register said she loved it and that I should be very careful cause it might go missing before I walked out of the store. Needless to say I didn't find her to be funny.

Tried new things with light design in the pictures. Can you guys please tell NURBS how cool he is for trying this for the first time? He NEVER gives himself enough credit for ANYTHING. And I am going crazy trying to make him realize how talented he is!! You won't find anyone with a bigger and better heart than NURBS. He's a great guy. God bless him. Just wish he knew how good he is.

DSM's on Twitter and Facebook if you'd like to keep in touch.

Alteast Try Not To Use Those Dreadful Words: Personal Fashion

Images by NURBS

Dress: Vintage; Shoes: Ninewest [like 6 yrs old]

I know I ask for it when I wear a Prabal Gurung-ish outfit like this one. I can totally hear David of the Nyanzi Report screaming “Color Blocking, Color blocking!!” in my ear all the way from London. So I am just going to put on my headphones and pretend like I don’t care. Ah-ha.

A few weeks ago I went on a hike to Mt. Beacon [upsate NY] with a bunch of friends. After the hike was over [and I was still alive], my friend Jess and I found a few cool stores in the area. Ofcourse vintage stores in small towns are so much more interesting and CHEAPER than in the city where even vintage/ thrifted stuff costs as much or more than retail. Found this fantastic silk dress with 80's padded shoulders and pockets and another jacket for under $30 total and I think it’s a total steal!!

Hope everyone had a happy weekend!! I sure did. More pics of the happy weekend to follow during the week.

PS: This shoot is ironic cause I really do not remember the last time I went into a grocery store to actually shop for groceries. It was kinda a weird feeling to go into one for a shoot today and pretend like I understand what veggies to buy...lol..

STOP WORK. NEVER WORK.: Personal Fashion

Images by NURBS

Dress: Alice and Olivia; Blue/ Silver Shoes: Steve Madden; Gold shoes: Topshop

Since I end up wearing my big gold shoes a lot on my shoots I decided that it was time I showed you guys that I do own a lot of other pairs too. I just don’t wear them that much [or at all] cause when I like some things, I get obsessed with them and keep wearing them over and over again till I get sick of it or till something better comes along. Lol.

I love that backdrop on the shutters. It’s perfectly befitting my current state of mind where I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with my utterly scheduled life. But the dress makes me happy. It is insanely pretty and fun to wear as long as the wind does not blow.

I hope everyone in the US had a wonderful Independence Day holiday. To the rest, I hope you had a fab weekend.
