Prabal Gurung SS 2013: Vogue India

This is one of the stories I covered for Vogue India web this past NYFW SS 2013. Here is the link to the story on Vogue.in. 

Lights Camera Action! On an almost quarter of a mile long runway at New York’s Pier 59 Prabal Gurung sent out his Spring Summer collection lead by model Joan Smalls looking stunning in an all white ensemble of cropped trousers, layered long tunic and a tailored jacket. The collection was inspired by Prabal’s Nepali heritage clubbed with sculptor Anish Kapoor’s work. White, grey, silver and red tones at the show clearly had their derivative from Anish Kapoor’s work and the prints on the blue and red shorts were reminiscent of all the reflections, be it the sky or the inversed street views, on Anish’s silvery mirrored sculptures. 

The silhouettes included trousers that looked like tailored chudidars scrunched at the bottom, long sheer kurta-like tunics but done in an extremely universal way, devoid of specific ethnicity, to enable its relevance in the global market and ofcourse tailored dresses and jackets. Although there was only one red carpet worthy gown in white and silver this season, the series did sport some casual tees and dresses better fit for ready-to-wear which was not that prominent in his last 2 collections. The idea of having a sheer flowy tail to his shorts was refreshing and original. Also the white and red color blocked sweatshirt with the sheer side panels was one of those pieces that could appeal to any wardrobe around the globe. 

Linda Farrow and Prabals’ eyewear collaboration is one of the best collaborations in the industry right now in my opinion. Shaded rectangular glasses in red, black and grey were spectacular and are the first thing on my list of things to get from this collection. In a world where sunglass’ shapes become so repetitive, these pairs are a perfect over-the-top normal.

And thanks Prabal for adopting theatrics in your presentation. The finale with all the models walking the runway as a group in front of beams of dramatic lights was a breathtaking sight and a total turn on. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next season. We shall be there with our red tinted LF X PG Sunglasses!

Shop My Closet: Garage Sale

Helloo Lovers,

   I have been planning a Garage sale [sans the garage] for a million years now and never gotten around to doing it. But it's finally time.

Things to Know About the SALE

- I have a LOT of reallly cooolll stufff.
- Most of it is not cheap and of really good quality.Which I will be selling for throw away prices! anything from $5- $100.. but it looks like most things will be in the avg.

$20-$30 range. $110 for my never worn Alexander Wang shoes and a Ritu Kumar jacket, etc. but yeah I am not clad in designer stuff. So don't expect too much of that.
-Since I have invested so much in my wardrobe over the past xx years, I did like to get some ROI so I can make rent next month or go buy a Comme Des Garcon skirt I have been eying for the past 6 months!
-Mostly may end up being the CDG Skirt.

- Might need a place to stay next month. 

-Some/most/all amount of the proceeds will go to my non-profit Asha for education. It depends on how much money I make. If it's too little of course all of it will go to Asha.
- Bring cash in change.
-Will be selling clothes, accessories, shoes, books, handcuffs [see the event link for some pictures of the stuff and their prices]

- Also selling some insane pieces from designer Retarded Velvet [not on sale though.]

Nothing Compares To You: Street Fashion

This girl was probably one of the most photographed girls at NYFW this year. And amongst the very very few people that I actually photographed even though I could see a whole lot of others photographing her [which I try to not do unless for an assignment for a job where I am expected to bring in the usual street fashion celebs]. She had the perfect mass appeal yet a twisted bad-ass look. I love it because I think at a deeper level I am always trying to get to that stage of balance myself in my day-to-day wardrobe. I like to be different but also be liked by most people. I don't think I have the guts to not give a shit at all. Don't necessarily thinks that's wrong or right. Just who I am and maybe [mayyybee] who she is?

PS: I wanted to plant one big red lipstick kiss on her blond shaved head. Just for dramatic effect. I still do! ewhhh .. but can't stop! It would be cool, I swear.

Bindi Calling Bindi: Street Fashion

I know we are all done with the multicolored hair and all that, but I still like the trend and think will always love it. But this girl is so bad-ass sexy its unbelievable! Love her casual comfy coolness.Take a moment to appreciate the details of her OTT blinged out phone case, her pyramid crystal ring, her Elvis blingy sunnies in her transparent purse et al. Ok?

Harem Pants and Top: Borrowed from Retarded Velvet [all opinions here are my own and this is not a paid gig]; Jacket: Suno; Shoes: Irregular Choices 

Can someone please explain the genius behind these prints to the non-Indian world? I am going to try but if you think you can do it better, you should in the comments section. 

PART ONE: The Pants 

These harem pants have a print of a very beloved and extremely famous caricature for a butter brand in India called Amul. This chubby "Amul Girl/ Baby" has been the mascot for the brand since 1967 and Amul ads are the best billboards on this planet! They are witty, always a spoof on current affairs hence relevant and they always incorporate this Amul Baby in it. These ads are so cool they've won a Guinness world record for the longest running ad campaign when first launched in 1967. I could have just given you the link to the wiki page on this info but nooooooooooooooo, I wanted to type it all while on a terrible work deadline just for you. For reals. So how ingenues is this idea by retarded velvet to put this Amul baby character on a pair of Harem plants?? 

PART TWO: The Top 

The top has another crazy Indian cultural and mythological comic strip called "Amar Chitra Katha" on it. So you can find out more about this here.

PART THREE: The Jacket

You have seen me use this jacket a couple of times before on the blog. It is insane in it's prints and colors too and I think unintentionally it does have an Indian feel to it [with the back print that you can see here] which totally compliments all the other modern [almost hipster] cut separates in this outfit with an Indian traditional pop culture print.

Princess on the Loose: Street Fashion

It is a good thing to take a break from taking a break sometimes and actually getting a shot in. I was catching up with some friends at the Grey Dog cafe one weekend and taking my order was Princess Ariel! [real name Jess]. I could not get out of that place without asking her for a picture and she was too cute to actually step outside for me. Love [beyond life] her head chain thing which I think would not have looked half as cool without the orange hair. I know it's the new trend to be wearing head chains but honestly you are not going to find one as unique, elaborate and beautiful as hers. She found hers at Buffalo Exchange and it is vintage. Jess's real profession is being a musician but she studied photography. I hope she likes the pictures I took of her. Taking pictures of photographers always makes me a bit nervous.

During and after every fashion week this is how I feel. I am going to stop at that note and refrain from saying anything more cause if I start I may not be able to stop. lol. 

Ben and I got kicked out of almost all the shops/ restaurants we tried to shoot at in China town today. If you look very closely in the second picture, there is a wall in the restaurant behind me that is fully covered in dollar bills. That was going to be the location for our shoot today but the stupid dudes working at the restaurant would not budge. It would have been beyond perfect for a shoot with this One Rupee [Indian currency] jumpsuit of mine from Retarded Velvet. No? Oh Well. We still got some serious shit just on the street. It's my Indian-Harakuju-Pimp-on-crack look y'all. It's right on the money! ;)
