Beauty and the Beast: Personal Fashion

Images by Hrishikesh Vimadalal

Dress: Payal Khandwala; Shoes: Ashish for Topshop

There is an artist who used to live in my room a long time ago before I moved into my apartment. He is apparently very famous for his work now. Back when he was living in my room, there were times when he could not make rent and such times he would pay his rent in kind by giving my roomate some of his art work which she ofcourse accepted. The long poster you see behind me in the 3rd and 5th picture are one of his works paid instead of rent. This one called "I will not make anymore depressing art. I will not make anymore depressing art. I will not make anymore depressing art. I will not make anymore depressing art.....". I think he was going through an unbearable dark phase and thought if he could just etch the sentence in his brain he would probably remember to implement it the next time he painted. My roommate has a painting of flowers from the next time he was unable to pay rent. It was his way of being positive. Except that the painting was of dead daffodils.

Payal Khandwala: Designer Spotlight

Images by Prutha Raithatha

Full Outfit: Payal Khandwala

If you have been following my blog for a while and my facebook page and my twitter, you've heard me harp about designer-artist Payal Khandwala's work. Well I finally got to meet her in person today while she was visiting NYC on a short trip from India. The great thing about meeting creative people who's aesthetic you genuinely like is that you feel at ease around them that probably comes from just knowing that they are your kinda people. Based purely on their design aesthetic, you feel comfortable and connected with them. We spent a lovely morning sipping on organic juices and talking about everything under the sun but shop. And I got to meet her lovely family and adorable little daughter Meera.

If you don't know her work yet, you can get an sample of it from these pictures. Yes, she is wearing her own designs. Check out her latest collection here. And this is a post of me wearing one of her designs from a couple of months ago. If you did like to buy any of her designs you can just email her or me and we can make it happen for you.

Hare Krishna: Personal Fashion

There is a very earthen feel to Payal Khandhwala's designs and I discovered her label on my recent trip to India. I bought this dress because it instantly made me feel like a glamorous saint and hence the inspiration to this shoot. We know that every outfit we wear evokes a feeling inside us. This one makes you feel peaceful. How insanely cool of a designer do you need to be to design outfits that make the wearer feel peaceful? It's just amazing.

The shoes are one of my favorite finds from a Fashion Night Out in NYC a year ago. They are some russian scarf boots I bought from this traveling shop on wheels called the Styleliner which sells carefully curated limited edition items that their owner Joey Wolffer finds from around the world. Trust me when I say that when you actually visit the van/ shop you will want everything in there. It's that good!

Hope all of you had a great weekend.

As for me all I have to say is Ohmmm.
