Getting Wiggy with It: Personal Fashion

Images by Anjali Bhargava

Dress: 1970’s Vintage from Vintage Variety; Shoes: Ashish for Topshop; Bangles: Random

My fetish for BIG hair was finally fulfilled by a super cute and cheap solution: A Wig!! I borrowed it from one of roommates and I love it!!! I do wish it were a brunette instead of a blonde though. Now here is a thought [Thought No. 1], if I don’t want to do crazy chemical things to my hair and would like the option to keep my current hair the way it is, is it ok for me to actually wear a wig on a day-to-day basis? I mean if I got a good one, not too fake, can I actually wear it in real life, say for dinner or to the movies? Just a thought. Don't laugh!!

I am proud to announce that if I don’t include my shoes, my today’s outfit costs less than $40 including accessories. Pls don’t ask me to include the shoes. Really. It’s embarrassing.

Found this incredible 1970’s dress at a vintage store in New Jersey [ahh...stop screaming all you Manhattanites..yes yes, I shopped in New Jersey, but the deal was just too freaking good] when I went there a couple of weekends ago to go to the beach. I almost raided the entire store and bought as much stuff as I could carry single handedly back to New York. COZ IT WAS SOO CHEAP!! So here is another thought [Thought No.2], do you think that someone somewhere in the 1970’s had the same exact taste in clothing, colors and style as me and maybe this was her favorite dress and that maybe even she wore / styled this outfit just like I have right now? She could be like my twin from another generation, right? Sooo cool !! My brains sometime have crazy ideas. Not always. Just sometimes. :)

XOXO

PS: This is one of my favorite styled outfits on myself so far. It's the hair, I know. But I feel the big hair, vintage, leopard print, high high wedges are all my current fav style statements. So all in one is a killer combo. Ok I'm done now. You can go back to whatever you were doing before this. :)

What an idea to wear a wig....what I mean to dinners etc...I think it's a fabulous thought. I think I might try that sometime....Maybe I'll practice on Halloween first...I'll be back for that. LOL

I've actually been thinking about wigs a lot lately LOL :$ And about getting a buzzcut. People would think I'm nuts but not like I really give a shit about that :P

I'm sure many people in the 70s had the same taste in style as you ;)

  16. I love it! I too have an affinity for loud 70s dresses, and this is a sweet one with great colors, pattern, pockets and everything.

And I love the wig! The abundance and audacity of it. I actually like the platinum blonde, it gives a Marie Antoinette feeling to the afro and it looks adorable on. Very inspiring.

I have a number of wigs and falls that I have worn about town with general success, so I say go for it! But there's one caveat: as with any extreme look, people will comment, which can be tiresome.

  19. Hi Prutha, I swung over from Vix's blog because of your intriguing comment of styling a vintage shoot for yourself. I LOVE IT! The wig, definitely the dress, the shoes. I especially loved the photo with you and the security guards.

What's great about wearing wigs is that they are already styled. No need to bother with hair goop and styling, it's always ready and waiting to go out the door looking absolutely perfect!

    Love your blog, Bonnie

  31. There's nothing wrong with shopping in NJ! :)

Re: your first thought - my 5th grade teacher used to do that! although she wore it more days than not - I didn't know it was a wig!

  32. Haha you're hilarious with your words! Fun reading your whims, Prutha!

The afro-wig is rockin chic girl, I'd wear it for parties I guess. I have been thinking about hair extensions you know...but the 'fake' factor keeps gnawing at me. I'm as confused as you are, for slightly different reasons as you can see! I imagine someone telling me 'gorgeous hair' and I'll be like "umm yeah oh well" ...you know what I mean?! Lol I'm still thinking though!

I think this style is very chic too. I'm glad someone is not afraid of throing in so many colours and making a statement. Looking for a fashion doppleganger, are you?! :)
